Lipitor is a prescription medication used in the treatment of high cholesterol. It is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Inc. and was first approved by the FDA in 1997.[1] Free samples of Lipitor may be available to patients interested in trying out the medication's effectiveness, and saving money in the process. A doctor's prescription is necessary in order to use the drug, and therefore samples of Lipitor will typically only be available through physicians' offices.

Lipitor Background

Lipitor is the trade name for atorvastatin, a type of drug called a statin that inhibits an enzyme that plays a central role in producing cholesterol in the liver.[4] Atorvastatin helps reduce bad cholesterol in the blood, while increasing good cholesterol. In addition, Lipitor may be used to treat those with type 2 diabetes or coronary heart disease, as it helps lower the risk of heart attack and stroke.[5]

Lipitor is currently the #1 doctor-prescribed, brand name cholesterol-lowering medication. Clinical trials have been performed on the drug for over 17 years, and have included over 80,000 patients. Lifestyle changes are typically prescribed along with the drug, and patients are advised to watch their diets and get adequate physical activity.[3]

How to Get Lipitor Samples

The best way to get free samples of Lipitor is through a doctor or health provider. Patients can simply ask their doctor if he or she has free samples available. While the manufacturer is no longer offering free trial vouchers, they have the "Lipitor for You" program that provides a $4 copay option to patients regardless of their insurance coverage.[6] Patients whose drugs are covered by state or federal programs are not eligible for this program. Those who do qualify can expect to save up to $600 a year with the $4 copay card.[6]

Lipitor coupons and patient assistance programs are additional ways patients can save on Lipitor. Coupons may provide dollars off discounts, while Pfizer patient assistance programs may offer up to several months worth of free medication for eligible patients. See the official Pfizer website for additional information, or call (866) 706-2400.[3]
