Lithium is a prescription antimanic agent that is primarily used in the treatment and prevention of manic episodes in patients suffering from bipolar disorder. It may also be prescribed to treat schizophrenia, cluster headaches, eating disorders and blood disorders such as anemia and other conditions. Lithium works by affecting the flow of sodium through the nerve and muscle cells of the body.[1]
Lithium side effects can vary by patient, and may include constipation, gas, bloating, hand tremors, weight fluctuation and more. Some more serious side effects, such as blackouts and seizures, may also occur.[1]
