Lupron Side Effects

Lupron is the brand name for leuprolide, which lowers levels of testosterone in the body. Manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, Lupron is a prescription medication that is used to treat the symptoms of prostate cancer in men, endometriosis in women, central precocious puberty in girls younger than eight years old and boys younger than nine years old, and uterine fibroids in women. The medication, which is a long-acting suspension, is administered by injection either into the muscle or slightly under the skin. Injections are administered at a clinic or medical office every one, three, four, or six months. [1]
As with many medications, Lupron may cause side effects. Some of these side effects may include pimple breakouts, dizziness, nausea, testicle pain in men, smaller testicles, impotence, hot flashes, night sweats, depression and pain in the muscles or the joints.[2]

Common Lupron Side Effects
The most common side effects of Lupron include weight fluctuation, pimples, tender breasts, reduced testicle size, swollen limbs or appendages, uneasy feeling, and vaginal discomfort. In addition, patients may notice a burning sensation or pain, along with bruising or skin hardening, in the region where the Lupron shot is administered.[2]
Serious side effects associated with Lupron may require prompt medical advice. These include back pain, numbness or tingling in the feet or legs, loss of bowel or bladder control, blood in urine, throwing up, breath that smells fruit-like, altered vision, and inability to move the limbs.[2]

Lupron Allergic Reactions
The active ingredient in Lupron is leuprolide, which may cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Lupron also contains inactive ingredients which may cause an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions to Lupron may include hives, rash, and swelling of face, tongue, throat, and lips. Patients are advised to discuss any known allergies with their healthcare provider before taking Lupron.[1]
Lupron Precautions and Warnings
- Patients taking Lupron may experience a reduction in bone density, which makes them more susceptible to bone breakage. However, there are certain precautions that may be taken to help lower this risk.[2]
- Aluminum-containing antacids, corticosteroids like methylprednisolone (Medrol) and prednisone (Deltasone), cancer chemotherapy, cyclosporine (Neoral, Restasis, Sandimmune), diuretics, lithium, seizure or thyroid disease medication, phenothiazines, and tetracycline may interact with Lupron.[1]
- Patients with certain medical conditions are advised to discuss possible Lupron risks with their physicians. These conditions include osteoporosis, certain cancers, urinary obstruction, diabetes, heart disease or low potassium levels.[2]
- Lupron patients may experience sensitive skin from prolonged exposure to the sunlight.[2]
