Prescription Drug Abuse
Although prescription medications can be used safely and effectively to treat both minor and major illnesses, in some cases they are taken for unauthorized purposes or in excessive dosages. In these cases, prescription drug abuse occurs. in some instances, this abuse leads to dependency. In others, it leads to health problems or even death.
Statistics show that about 20% of U.S. citizens over the age of 12 (roughly 52 million people) have used prescriptions for non-medical use. About one in 12 high school students fall in this category, with Oxycodone and Vicodin topping the list of most widely-abused drugs.[1]
Drug Side Effects
All drugs, supplements and even vitamins come with possible side effects. The National Institute of Health advises that consumers consult a physician before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicine or supplement to learn about adverse reactions or interactions with other drugs. Side effects may be more severe among those with pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure, kidney damage or repressed immune systems.
Some normally well-tolerated drugs have serious side effects when taken in high doses. Tylenol, for example, can cause fatal liver damage when users consume too much. Side effects and warnings are typically present in package inserts or prescription guides for drugs; however, they may not be listed on products labelled as "supplements," which are not as well-regulated.
