Melatonin coupons, discount programs or pharmacy sales may allow supplement users to purchase this over-the-counter product for less. Melatonin pills contain synthetic hormones that replicate naturally-occurring melatonin in the body. According to the NIH, or National Institutes of Health, melatonin is used to help regulate the internal clock for better sleep cycles, to help minimize the impact of jet-lag or to help users fall asleep faster. The NIH deems the supplement as "possibly effective" for most of its intended uses, citing it as "likely effective" only for sleeping problems among the blind, as well as in autistic and mentally underdeveloped children.[1]

Side effects or melatonin are typically mild in nature. In the short term, it may cause abdominal cramping, headaches, irritability, daytime tiredness, dizziness or depressed feelings. It is not intended for children in most cases, as the supplement can affect hormones that could interfere with proper development. It is also not recommended for pregnant or nursing women.[1]

About Melatonin

Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland that helps regulate bodily functions and circadian rhythms.[2] In the body, melatonin is secreted in different amounts according to physical stimuli such as light. The highest amounts of melatonin are typically found in the body right before normal bedtime. People with difficulty sleeping or who work unusual schedules may use a synthetic form of melatonin to help spark the body's natural sleep response.[2]

Melatonin has been tested on a variety of conditions and situations, and is potentially effective for jet lag, delayed sleep phase syndrome, insomnia in the elderly, some sleep disorders, sleep enhancement for healthy individuals, thermoregulation, macular degeneration, chronic fatigue syndrome, dyspepsia, headache prevention, irritable bowel syndrome, menopause, scarcoidosis, tinnitus and work shift disorder.[2]

Melatonin is generally sold as an over-the-counter supplement. Studies have indicated general dosing guidelines as 0.1 to 75 milligrams taken by mouth every night for adults over 18 years of age.[3]
