It is taken orally, and comes as a tablet, an extended release tablet, or a liquid. It is typically taken two to three times each day with food. About Metformin

Metformin decreases the amount of glucose in the blood by reducing both the sugar absorbed from food, and the glucose produced by the liver. Metformin has also been shown to help insulin work more efficiently.[1] It is used to treat Type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome. Metformin is also prescribed for people with pre-diabetes and to treat weight gain caused by certain drugs prescribed to treat mental illness.[3]

Side effects of metformin include gas, changes in bowel regularity, heartburn, headache, flushing and muscular pain. It can also cause low blood pressure, or hypoglycemia, which is characterized by shakiness, lightheadedness, mood changes, perspiration, clumsiness, increased hunger, headache, and oral tingling.[1]
