Metformin is a the generic name for the prescription medications Fortamet, Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Glumetza, and Riomet.[1] It is used alongside proper diet and exercise to control high blood sugar in patients suffering from Type 2 diabetes. Metformin is a biguanides, and works by helping restore a body's ability to respond properly to insulin. It also helps lower the amounts of sugar made by the liver, and that stomach and intestines absorb.[4]
