Mobic is a brand name for meloxicam, a nonsteriodal anti-flammatory drug (or NSAID for short). Mobic is prescribed to treat pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. Patients with histories of blood clot, stroke, heart attack, heart disease, asthma, seizure-causing afflictions or polyps in their noses may need special tests or dosage adjustments to safely use Mobic.

Mobic's side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach and runny nose. In some cases, more serious side effects can occur, like weight gain and jaundice. In addition, consumers who use NSAIDs like Mobic have been shown to be at greater risk for stroke and heart attack.[1] [2]

Mobic Allergic Reactions

Patients who are allergic to meloxicam will likely experience allergic reactions to Mobic. Patients who are allergic to other NSAIDs, such as aspirin, Advil, Aleve, and Motrin, are also prone to allergic reactions from Mobic.[1]

Inactive ingredients in Mobic, such as colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and sodium citrate dihydrate, may also cause allergic reactions.[3]

Mobic Precautions and Warnings

  • Mobic has been reported to cause harm to babies when taken in the final trimester of pregnancy. In addition, it is only to be taken in any stage of pregnancy if the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
  • Although it is not certain whether or not Mobic is transmitted to infants through breast milk, drugs similar in makeup have ben shown to do so, and can cause damage to nursing babies.[4]
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors such as benazepril (Lotensin) and fosinopril (Monopril), diuretics, lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid) and methotrexate (Rheumatrex) may interact with Mobic.[2]
  • All drugs in the NSAIID category, including Mobic, can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, which can strike suddenly with no warning. These risks are likely to be higher among those who have used NSAIDs for an extended period of time. Signs to seek immediate medical help include shortness of breath, slurred speech, pain in the chest, and weakness that only occurs on one side of the body.[2]
  • NSAIDs like Mobic can also increase the risk of punctures in the stomach, as well as ulcers and stomach bleeding. Patients who drink large amounts of alcohol while taking Mobic may be more likely to suffer from these conditions, as are those who take additional NSAIDs, and elderly people. Danger signs include blood in the vomit (resembling coffee grounds). bloody stool, tar-like stool, heartburn and pain in the stomach. This and other serious NSAID side effects may be more likely to occur when the drugs are taken for an extended period of time.[1]
