Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug found in a variety of name brands, like Aleve. The ingredient can be found both over-the-counter and prescribed products. Prescribed brands with naproxen are used to treat severe, chronic pain such as rheumatoid and juvenile arthritis, as well as osteoarthritis. Nonprescription naproxen used to treat minor arthritis pain, as well symptoms of colds, muscle aches, headaches, menstrual pain, and back pain. It is also used to reduce fever.[1]
Naproxen has a number of common side effects that patients may experience, such as headache, increased thirst, hearing problems, cold symptoms and sleeping problems. Those who suffer from heart, liver or kidney disease, blood disorders or those who smoke regularly may not be suitable candidates for naproxen.[2]

Common Naproxen Side Effects
Common side effects of naproxen include gas, sores in the mouth, hearing issues, ringing in ears, cold signs, dizziness, headache, thirst, sleeping troubles, faintness, diarrhea, constipation and burning or tingling in arms or legs.[2]
Serious side effects of naproxen include changes in vision, hoarseness, excessive drowsiness, jaundice, fast heartbeat, discolored urine, blood in urine, pale skin, stomach pain, loss of appetite, fever, chills, random weight gain and back pain.[2]

Naproxen Allergic Reactions
Naproxen is the active ingredient in a number of name brand drugs, such as Aleve and Naprosyn, which may cause allergic reactions in certain individuals. Dangerous reactions to naproxen include hives, swelling of the face, throat or tongue, constricted breathing and rash. Patients who are allergic to any other types of NSAIDs, such as Advil, Motrin or other forms of ibuprofen, may also be susceptible to allergies with naproxen.[2]
Naproxen Precautions and Warnings
- In some asthma cases, NSAIDs like naproxen may cause breathing problems.[3]
- Naproxen is classified by the FDA as a category C pregnancy drug. It may cause fetal harm. Taking naproxen in the last three months of pregnancy may result in birth defects of unborn children. The drug can pass into breast milk and harm children who are breastfeeding.[4] [3]
- Naproxen can make patients drowsy or depressed, making certain tasks, such as driving or operating machinery, difficult to do. Drinking alcohol while on naproxen can add to the feelings of drowsiness.[2]
- Naproxen can cause the stomach or intestines to bleed. This is more likely to occur in those who smoke, chew tobacco or drink alcohol every day. Older adults are also more prone to this side effect.[3]
- Naproxen increases sensitivity to the sun. Naproxen users are advised to wear sun protection if they will be exposed to sunlight.[3]
- Naproxen can increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anti-platelet drugs, such as clopidogrel (in prescription Plavix), blood thinners like warfarin, and other OTC and prescription drugs.[3]
- Naproxen taken with other NSAIDs has a higher likelihood of side effects.[3]
