Nasonex Side Effects

Nasonex nasal inhalation, the brand name for prescription medication mometasone furoate monohydrate, is a nasal spray that treats and prevents symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergies from indoor or outdoor sources. It can also treat nasal polyps. Nasnonex helps fight runny or itching nose and sneezing. Nasonex is not an antihistamine or a decongestant like other allergy medications, but rather is a topical steroid. It works by reducing inflammation or swelling in the nasal passages.[1]

As with any medication, Nasonex can cause a variety of side effects, the most common of which are headache, virus, throat irritation, nosebleeds and coughs. Nasonex can also cause wounds to heal more slowly, and is not recommended if there are any cuts or sores on the nose. Other side effects are also possible.[2]

Nasonex patients are instructed to blow their nose before use, and to cover one nostril and tilt their head forward slightly before spraying the medication.[3]

Common Nasonex Side Effects

Nasonex will not cause side effects among all users. When it does cause side effects, they usually consist of viral infections (like colds or flu), irritation of the throat, nosebleeds, headache and coughing.[2]

Nasonex will, in rare cases, cause side effects that are severe in nature and require prompt medical evaluation. Such potentially-dangerous side effects include altered vision, wheezing and a yeast infection that occurs in the throat or in the nasal passages.

Patients who experience major side effects while using Nasonex or other drugs have the option to report them to the FDA via their Adverse Event Reporting program. Adverse reactions may be reported over the Internet or by telephone at 1-800-332-1088.[3]

Nasonex Allergic Reactions

Most Nasonex patients will tolerate the drug without exhibiting any allergic reaction. However, allergies may occur and can be potentially life-threatening. Signs of serious allergies include swelling of the face or throat, a rash on the skin, itching skin and problems breathing. Patients may be allergic to the mometasone in Nasonex, or to any of the other substances contained in the product.[4]

Nasonex Precautions and Warnings

  • Nasonex can reduce the body's ability to fight off infections. Therefore, Nasonex patients are instructed to avoid contact with people who have infections such as chicken pox or measles.
  • Nasonex may not be right for patients with viral, fungal or bacterial infections, including herpes infections of the eye. It also may not be right for patients with history of glaucoma, tuberculosis, cataracts or nasal ulcers, as well as those who have undergone surgery in the recent past.[3]
  • Patients who accidentally skip a dose of Nasonex may take it as soon as they remember, but should not take it if it is almost time for the next dose. Nasonex dosages are not to be doubled up.[3]
  • There is a slight possibility that Nasonex can hamper growth among children.
  • Nasonex is not recommended for pregnant women unless a clear need for the drug has been demonstrated. Women who may become pregnant are directed to discuss potential risks with their doctor.[4]
