NuvaRing is the name of a hormonal birth control device that is available by prescription only. The NuvaRing is inserted into the vagina and changed each month. With NuvaRing, there is no possibility of missing daily pills, although the vaginal ring is equally effective as oral contraception. The active ingredients are etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol. NuvaRing does not protect against STDs, and users have an increased risk of blood clotting and other cardiovascular problems.[1]
Merck, the manufacturer of Nuvaring, offers a savings program that can help some patients save money on their prescriptions. Women can register for the program online to print up a coupon voucher good for up to $15 off of each NuvaRing prescription.

About Nuvaring
Approved by the FDA in 2001, Nuvaring contains the same hormones that are used in the pill: estrogen and progestin. NuvaRing prevents the ovaries from producing mature eggs. Different than oral contraceptives that deliver hormones through a daily pill, NuvaRing delivers the hormones vaginally through a flexible ring that remains in place for 3 weeks. Nuvaring is 99% effective when used correctly.[3]
Some Nuvaring users may experience side effects. The most common adverse reactions are headache, nausea, vaginal infections and irritation, vaginal secretions, and weight gain. NuvaRing has also been linked to dangerous blood clots, which occur most often in patients who smoke cigarettes. Those over 35 years old and those who consume more than 15 cigarettes a day are most at risk.[1]
Nuvaring Patient Assistance Programs and Coupons
Consumers may be eligible to save on their prescription of NuvaRing through a Merck savings program, which offers coupons for $15 off each of up to six prescriptions for NuvaRing. To get coupons, patients must fill out a form on the NuvaRing website. If eligible, patients print the coupon and present it with a valid prescription to a participating mail-order or retail pharmacy. The coupon may be printed as many times as desired. However, each patient cannot use coupons for more than six NuRing prescriptions.[4]
This offer is not valid for patients with Medicare, Medicaid, or other state or federal medical of pharmaceutical benefit plan. Private insurance is okay. The offer is also void in Massachusetts if a third-party payer reimburses any amount of the prescription price; it is also void in Maine.[4]
