Omnaris, or ciclesonide, is a nasal spray that treats the symptoms of both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, or "hay fever." These symptoms include sneezing and stuffy, runny, or itchy nose. Omnaris is a type of prescription medication known as a corticosteroid which works by preventing and decreasing inflammation in the nose. Users are typically instructed to use Omnaris in nostril, just once per day. Patients may notice it starting to work after a day or two, but Omnaris can take weeks to fully relieve allergies.[1]

Omnaris may cause minor side effects such as headaches or sore throat. It can also occasionally cause side effects that are more serious, such as muscle weakness or irregular periods.[1]

Omnaris Allergic Reactions

Signs of potentially serious allergic reactions to ciclesonide include hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Allergic reactions can be triggered by ciclesonide or any one of the inactive ingredients in Omnaris. Inactive ingredients are potassium sorbate, microcrystalline cellulose, hypromelloses, edetate disodium, carboxymethylcellulose sodium, and hydrochloric acid.[4]

Patients who are also allergic to corticosteroid nasal sprays like Flonase, Rhinocort Aqua, or Beconase AQ, are at risk of experiencing allergic reactions to Omnaris.[1]

Omnaris Precautions and Warnings

  • Ciclesonide may decrease the ability to fight infection. Therefore, Omnaris users are more prone to catch illnesses, and are advised to avoid sick people, particularly those with measles or chicken pox. Washing hands frequently can help reduce the risk of infection.[1]
  • Certain other medical conditions, such as eczema, arthritis, or asthma may get worse when the oral steroid dose is decreased.[1]
  • Omnaris users may not be able to heal as well after surgery, or deal with other stresses to the body such as major asthma attacks.[1]
  • Children who take Omnaris may not grow as quickly as they should. This may or may not affect final adult height.[1]
  • Omnaris may cause serious eye problems, such as glaucoma and cataracts.[4]
