About Omnicef

Omnicef, the trade name for the drug cefdinir, is provided in capsule and liquid suspension form. The drug is usually taken once or twice a day. Because of a potential for stomach upset, Omnicef should be taken with food.[4] The liquid form should be shaken well before administration to mix the medication evenly in the suspension. Patients commonly feel better before their supply of the drug is consumed but the entire prescription should be taken on schedule. Omnicef and other antibiotics are effective against infections caused by bacteria; some of those illnesses are forms of pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, skin infections, tonsillitis, and sinusitis.[4]

The drugs are not effective against illness caused by viruses, like colds and influenza. Because of the possibility of developing resistance to antibiotics, Omnicef and other drugs of this class should only be prescribed when the infection is proven or strongly suspected to be bacterial in origin.[1]

Omnicef Assistance Programs and Coupons

There are several opportunities for patients to save on Omnicef prescriptions, which can carry a hefty price.

  • Physicians are often given free samples and coupons so their patients can try new medications.
  • The Abbott Patient Assistance Program provides savings for qualified patients, generally those with low incomes who do not have private insurance and do not qualify for government programs like Medicare and Medicaid.[6] Patients can call 1-800-222-6885 for further information.[3]
  • A free drug savings card that saves from 10% to 75%, depending on the medication, is accepted in thousands of pharmacies, both chains and independent stores, and can be downloaded online at http://pharmacycard.org.[7] Some pharmaceutical manufacturers also provide rebates to holders of these cards.
  • Another third-party website for coupon savings on medications is MedicationCoupons.com, where consumers receive savings on thousands of drugs, including OTC medications. This site offers instant coupons, including a service sending them by text message to cellphones.[8]
  • Large chain pharmacies like Walgreens Prescription Club, CVS ExtraCare Program, Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan, and Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan provide significant savings on Omnicef.
