Omnicef Allergic Reactions

Patients who have a known allergy to cefdinir, or are allergic to other cephalosporin antibiotics like penicillin, Ceclor (or the generic cefaclor), Keflex (or the generic equivalent ephalexin) are likely to experience an allergic reaction to Omnicef.[1]

Inactive ingredients in Omnicef, like sucrose NF, citric acid USP, sodium citrate USP, sodium benzoate NF, xanthan gum NF, guar gum NF, artificial strawberry and cream flavors, silicon dioxide NF and magnesium stearate NF, may also cause allergic reactions in certain patients.[3]

Omnicef Precautions and Warnings

  • Some antacids or products containing the mineral iron can interfere with the absorption of Omnicef. Patients are advised to leave a two hour window between taking Omnicef and antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, or any iron supplement.
  • Omnicef may not be right for patients who have histories of kidney problems, diabetes or colitis.[1]
  • Elderly patients may be more prone to experiencing side effects of Omnicef. This is because the drug is processed by the kidneys, and kidney function tends to decrease with age.
  • Pregnant women are advised to discuss their condition with a doctor to weigh potential risks. Omnicef is not typically transferred to infants through breastfeeding.[6]
