Pantoprazole Side Effects
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Pantoprazole is the generic name for a prescription medication that treats the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. Pantoprazole is sold under the brand name Protonix. GERD occurs when stomach acid flows upward and infiltrates the esophagus. GERD can cause heartburn and possible injury of the esophagus by eroding the surface, and is thought to be a precursor to esophageal cancer in some situations.[1] Pantoprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor, and reduces acid production in stomach. This can enable the esophagus to heal and stop future injury from occuring. Pantoprazole is also used for other ailments that cause excess stomach acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.[2]
Side effects of pantoprazole include headache, diarrhea, dizziness, gas, and pain in the joints or the abdominal region. More serious adverse reactions can include increased risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD), as well as increased bone fracture risk.[2]

About Drug Side Effects
Pantoprazole Allergic Reactions
Patients may be allergic to the active ingredient in drugs containing pantoprazole, or to any other ingredients present in a particular preparation of the drug. Patients who have exhibited allergies to certain other drugs are more likely to have reactions to pantoprazole. These include Prilosec, AciPhex, Nexium, Zegrid and Prevacid, as well as any of their generic counterparts.[2]
Pantoprazole Precautions and Warnings
- There may be a link between pantoprazole and diarrhea from the Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) bacterium. This type of diarrhea does not get better, and can lead to more serious issues with the intestines. Anyone using pantoprazole or any other kind of proton pump inhibitor who develops persistent diarrhea is urged to contact a medical professional at once.[2]
- People who use proton-pump inhibitors such as pantoprazole are more susceptible to bone fracturing. This occurs most commonly among patients who have been using the drugs for extended periods of time, and in relatively high amounts. Patients who are 50 years old or older may be even more prone to fracturing than younger individuals.[2]
- Patients who use this medicine for a long period of time run the risk of weakening the lining of the stomach.[2]
- Pantoprazole is not intended for use among females who are pregnant unless their medical condition clearly necessitates this treatment. In addition, pantoprazole can be transmitted to newborn babies through the mother's milk.[4]
- There are a number of medications that can cause adverse reactions when mixed with pantoprazole. These include warfarin (Coumadin) and other blood thinners; iron supplements; ampicillin (Principen); and diuretics (also called water pills).
- Pantoprazole may not be safe for patients who have low blood magnesium, or have ever had this condition.[2]
