Percocet Side Effects

From Pharmacy Drug Guide

Jump to: navigation, search

Percocet is a brand name for a combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone hydrochloride used against moderate to severe pain.[1] Percocet side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; dizziness or drowsiness; dry mouth; or blurry vision. Most patients tolerate Percocet quite well, although constipation is a common problem for many.[2] With its narcotic oxycodone content (oxycodone is an opioid), Percocet can be habit-forming, and patients who have had difficulties with other narcotics may not be a good fit for this drug.

Common Percocet Side Effects

Percocet side effects can include stomach distress like nausea and vomiting, which may be alleviated by taking the drug with food. Mild dizziness might also result.[4] Constipation can be a problem with oxycodone and similar drugs, but drinking plenty of water and eating a high fiber diet plus exercising will help, as will a laxative or stool softener.[4] Percocet may affect patients differently over time, perhaps losing some effectiveness, which might require a change in dosage or medication.[5]

About Drug Side Effects

Some of the adverse reactions that can occur with medications like Percocet

Percocet Allergic Reactions

While allergic reactions to Percocet are not common, patients who have had adverse reactions to acetaminophen or oxycodone may experience allergy symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Patients who experience any of these side effects are advised to contact their doctors right away:

  • Itching
  • Swelling, especially in areas of the face or throat
  • Breathing trouble
  • Severe dizziness[4]

Prescription Acetaminophen/Opioid Combinations

FDA Announces limit to acetaminophen in combination drugs to prevent liver damage

Percocet Precautions and Warnings

  • Drinking alcoholic beverages while taking Percocet can result in serious harm to the liver. Symptoms of liver damage include:
    • Passing darker-colored urine
    • Yellow tint in the eyes or skin
    • Abdominal pain
    • Nausea or vomiting that does not go away[4]
  • Taking high doses of Percocet or taking the drug for a long period of time may result in withdrawal symptoms when use is stopped. Patients are advised to take only the prescribed dose at the prescribed schedule, and are directed not allow others to take their Percocet.
  • Acetaminophen is present in many over the counter drugs, including those for coughs and colds, so overdose is possible if these are combined with Percocet. This may cause liver damage.[4][6]
  • Liquid forms of Percocet may contain alcohol, sugar or other substances that may adversely effect diabetics.[4]
  • While Percocet has not been carefully studied to determine its effect on pregnancy, acetaminophen has been judged to be relatively safe. Oxycodone does not seem to cause fetal defects but newborns who have been exposed to oxycodone before birth may experience withdrawal symptoms.[2]
  • Patients taking Percocet may feel faint if they stand up too suddenly from a reclining or sitting position. This side effect can be alleviated by moving more slowly while rising up.
  • Senior citizens are more vulnerable to Percocet side effects, and are more likely to experience dizziness and issues with urination, as well as excessive tiredness.[5]
