Phentermine Side Effects
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Phentermine is the active ingredient in several prescription medications that are used for short periods of time to accelerate weight loss in overweight or obese people, typically in combination with exercise and a low-calorie diet. Phentermine, a stimulant similar to an amphetamine, is an appetite-suppressing diet pill. Most people take phentermine for three to six weeks; the length of treatment depends on the response to the medication, but it is typically not recommended for a longer period of time.
Common side effects of phentermine include dry mouth, diarrhea, upset stomach and unpleasant taste. More serious side effects can also occur, and phentermine can worsen existing cardiovascular problems.[1]

About Drug Side Effects
Phentermine Allergic Reactions
Patients who have previously demonstrated allergies to phentermine or to other sympathomimetic amines are likely to have reactions to any drug containing phentermine. Examples of other sympathomimetic amine drugs are stimulants like amphetamines; appetite suppressants like diethylpropion; and decongestants like pseudoephedrine. Medicines that contain phentermine will also have a number of inactive ingredients, which may also be potential allergens.[3]
Phntermine Precautions and Warnings
- Phentermine is not recommended for use among patients with certain medical conditions. These include vascular heart diseases like heart attack, a history of alcohol abuse or abuse of other drugs, psychiatric issues like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, overactive thyroid, or unmanaged high blood pressure (called hypertension).
- It is possible for phentermine to cause harm to unborn babies when used by the birth mother during pregnancy. The risks are greatest during the final months. Phentermine can also be transmitted through breast milk, potentially harming nursing infants.
- Elderly individuals are at a higher risk of experiencing side effects such as high blood pressure or dizziness while taking phentermine, as the drug is processed through the kidneys and kidney function goes down with age.[3]
- Phentermine may cause drowsiness, which can affect the patient's ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.[1]
- Diabetics may need to reduce their insulin intake while taking phentermine.[1]
- Alcohol can exacerbate some of the side effects of phentermine.[1]
- Phentermine can react with a wide variety of drugs, vitamins and supplements. These include antidepressants like Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine), and Zoloft (sertraline), as well as insulin, weight loss drugs and MAO inhibitors.[1]
- Phentermine is not as safe for older adults. Typically, doctors prescribe less risky weight loss drugs for patients over the age of 65.[1]
- It is not safe to double phentermine doses to make up for missing a pill.[1]
