Prevacid, the brand name for lansoprazole, is sold both as a prescription and over the counter. About Prevacid
Prevacid is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It treats conditions such as acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Prevacid also helps to heal damage to the stomach and esophagus that is caused by stomach acid. Prevacid may take up to four days to have full effect, and is not recommended for immediate heartburn relief.[5]
While most patients tolerate Prevacid well, some side effects may be experienced when taking this acid reducing medication. The most commonly experienced Prevacid side effects are diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and constipation.[6] Consistent use of Prevacid for periods greater than one year, or high doses of the product, may also increase the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, wrist, or spine.[7] In general, those who use proton pump inhibitors like Prevacid are more likely to get fractures than those who don't use them.[1]
Prevacid Coupons and Patient Assistance Programs
- A printable coupon for $4 off Prevacid is available on the official Prevacid 24HR website. The program is extended to patients who don't have prescription drug insurance, are not able to receive Medicare Part D, and meet certain income requirements. Income caps are based on a sliding scale; single patients may not earn over $45,000 annually, and families of four may not earn over $90,000 annually.[9]
