Prilosec Side Effects
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Prilosec is the brand name for the heartburn and GERD medication omeprazole. It is available in both prescription and nonprescription forms. Prilosec OTC is available over-the-counter to treat frequent heartburn, or heartburn that occurs at least two or more days per week. Potential Prilosec side effects include stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, headache, and fever. Bone fractures are also more likely with the use of proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec.[1]
Prescription Prilosec is used by adult and pediatric patients suffering from erosive esophagitis and symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Prilosec is also used in adults for the short-term treatment of duodenal and benign gastric ulcers, and the long-term treatment of conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition in which the stomach produced too much acid. About Drug Side Effects
Prilosec Allergic Reactions
The use of Prilosec is contraindicated for patients with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to omeprazole, other benzimidazoles, or to any of the inactive ingredients, which include cellulose, disodium hydrogen phosphate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypermellose, lactose, mannitol, and sodium lauryl sulfate. [2]
Patients who are allergic to similar drugs Nexium, Prevacid, Protonix, Aciphex and Dexilant are likely to have reactions to Prilosec as well.[1]
Serious allergic reactions to Prilosec may result in anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal if left untreated.[3]
Prilosec Precautions and Warnings
- Prilosec is known to decrease the therapeutic effect of antiretroviral drugs such as atazanavir and nelfinavir. [2]
- Prilosec can reduce the effectiveness of clopidogrel, sold under the brand name Plavix, when the two drugs are taken within 12 hours of each other.[2]
- Gastric-pump inhibitors like Prilosec may increase the risk of wrist, hip, or spine fractures in certain people. This is most likely to occur among those who use relatively large amounts for more than a year, and people over the age of 50 may be most susceptible.[1]
- Prilosec can interfere with benzodiazepines like Xanax and Valium.
- Prilosec is classified as FDA pregnancy category C, which means that animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus, yet there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans. It is not known if Prilosec will harm an unborn baby.
- Studies have determined that Prilosec is excreted in human milk during breast feeding. Prilosec may cause serious adverse reactions in nursing infants. [2]
- Patients who have had heartburn for three months or longer, or have additional symptoms like dizziness, chest pain, bloody vomit or stool, or breathing difficulty, may have a more serious condition and are advised to seek medical guidance.[1]
- Patients are advised not to take more than one dose at a time, not even to make up for a missed dose.[1]
