About Pristiq

Pristiq is an oral extended-release tablet that is usually prescribed in a once daily dosage to control the symptoms of depression. This antidepressant in classified within a group of drugs referred to selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).[10] SNRIs work to affect chemicals in the brain that may cause depression. Chemically similar to the existing antidepressant Effexor, Wyeth, the drug's distributor, claims that Pristiq has several advantages over its predecessor:[11]

  • Patients may begin taking Pristiq at the therapeutic dosage of 50 mg, rather than beginning at a lower dose and ramping up to the therapeutic dosage.
  • Pristiq is less likely to interact with other medications that are metabolized by the liver.

Detractors view Pristiq as a patent extender, as the Effexor patent expired in 2010.[12]
