Protonix is the original brand name for the generic prescription medication pantoprazole. Protonix treats the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, a condition in which acid from the stomach flows backward into the esophagus. GERD can cause heartburn and may injure the esophagus. GERD is also considered a potential precursor to esophageal cancer. Pantoprazole treats GERD by decreasing the amount of acid secreted in the stomach, allowing the esophagus to heal and stopping further damage. Pantoprazole also helps prevent ulcers, and can treat other conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Pantoprazole is in a class of medications called proton-pump inhibitors, or PPIs. Protonix can lead to certain side effects, from nausea, stomach pain, and dizziness to muscle spasms or seizures. In addition, extended or heavy use of proton pump inhibitors can cause patients to fracture bones.[1]

Protonix Precautions and Warnings

  • Protonix, like other proton pump inhibitors, can increase the risk of bone fracture, particularly among those who use it for a year or more, those who take large amounts, and patients over 50 years of age.[1]
  • Protonix might not be right for patients with histories of liver disease.[2]
  • It is possible for some patients to mistake heartburn for something more serious. Patients are advised to inform their doctors if they experience perspiration, chest or shoulder pain, lightheadedness or mysterious weight loss.[2]
  • In March, 2011 the FDA notified healthcare providers and patients that long-term use of proton pump inhibitors such as Protonix be associated with hypomagnesemia - low levels of magnesium in the blood. Some of the cases occurred after three months of use, but most occurred with usage longer than one year.
