Remicade is the brand name for infliximab injection, a tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitor, also called a TNF blocker, that diminishes the effects of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Remicade is prescribed to treat rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease, ankylosing spondylitis, ulcerative colitis, and psoriasis. Manufactured by Janssen Biotech, Inc.,
Remicade is administered intravenously, typically by a doctor or nurse once every two to eight weeks.[1]
Patients taking Remicade may experience common side effects such as heartburn, nausea, sinus pain, back pain, mild skin rash and white patches in the mouth. In addition, Remicade may cause more serious side effects and health issues for those with liver disease, heart problems, diabetes, a nerve or muscle disorder, active or recent infection, seizures, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, history of cancer, numbness, tingling, a weak immune system, and those who have recently been vaccinated.[2]

Common Remicade Side Effects
Common side effects associated with Remicade may include stuffy nose, back pain, mild skin rash, upset stomach, heartburn, white patches in the mouth, vaginal itching, burning, or other yeast infection symptoms in women, pain in the stomach, and runny nose.[2] Some of the more serious side effects of Remicade include rapid weight gain, seizures, decreased desire for food, jaundice, strange bruising, strange bleeding, palid skin tone, tingling, numbness, blood in the stool, dark-colored urine, worsening of psoriasis, or lymphoma. Patients experiencing these symptoms are advised by physicians to speak with their healthcare provider.[1]
Drug Side Effects
Remicade Allergic Reactions
Patients are typically monitored for two hours after a Remicade injection to ensure that a severe allergic reaction does not occur. Delayed reactions to the medication may also occur anytime from three to 12 days after receiving the injection. Allergic reactions to Remicade may be signified by hives, swelling of hands or face, joint and muscle pain, sore throat, trouble swallowing, and fever or chills.[1]
Allergies to Remicade may result from the active ingredient infliximab, or the inactive ingredients such as sucrose, polysorbate 80, monobasic sodium phosphate monohydrate, and dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate.[4]
Patients who have exhibited previous allergies to mouse proteins may also experience allergic reactions to Remicade.[1]
Remicade Precautions and Warnings
- While taking Remicade, patients are advised to talk with their doctor before receiving any vaccinations.[1]
- Patients who have experienced congestive heart failure are advised to tell their doctor before receiving a Remicade injection.[1]
- Remicade may cause serious health conditions in certain patients such as lymphoma, blood disorders, nervous system disorders, liver injury, a lupus-like syndrome, and psoriasis.[3]
- Remicade increases the risk of infection. Therefore, patients are instructed to wash their hands thoroughly, and to prevent contact with those who are known to have infections like chickenpox or influenza.[3]
- Children are advised to get all recommended vaccinations taken care of before starting treatment with Remicade.[1]
- Aged patients are more likely to contract infections when taking Remicade.
