Restylane Side Effects
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Restylane is a prescription cosmetic gel injection used to treat facial wrinkles and folds. It is also injected into the lips of patients over the age of 21 to make them fuller. Made of hyaluronic acid (NASHA), Restalyne lasts for up to a year and a half when used as a wrinkle filler, or about six months when used in lips.
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in all living organisms. It provides volume and fullness to the skin and is effective in correcting moderate to severe facial wrinkles. Restylane is predominantly used to eliminate wrinkles such as lipstick lines (below the nose and above the upper lip), marionette lines (the area that extends down from the corner of the mouth to the jawline), and laugh lines (the nasolabial folds that run from each side of the nose to the corner of the mouth).[1]
Side effects of Restalyne are typically limited to the dermal layer, and include swelling, redness, bruises or tender skin.[1]

Common Restylane Side Effects
Restylane patients may experience mild to moderate swelling in the days following treatment. Other common side effects, which can last up to a week for nasolabial folds or up to two weeks in for lips, include bruising, pain, redness, and tenderness.
The use of products such as aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications like Advil and Aleve, St. John's Wort, and vitamin E supplements may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.[1]
About Drug Side Effects
Restylane Allergic Reactions
Restylane contains trace amounts of gram-positive bacteria.[2] Patients with a history of allergies to gram-positive microorganisms could have a reaction to Restylane. Restalyne-L contains the topical anesthetic lidocaine, and can cause a reaction in those with lidocaine allergies. Patients who have previously been hospitalized for drug allergies are advised not to use Restylane.[1]
Restylane Precautions and Warnings
- Restylane has not been approved by the FDA for patients who are pregnant or breast-feeding.
- Restylane is not recommended for patients with bleeding disorders.
- Patients who have recently used any anticoagulant drugs are advised not to use Restylane.[1]
- Patients who have had facial cold sores may experience subsequent outbreaks upon using Restylane.[1]
- There is no research showing that topical hyaluronic acids have any effect on aging (Restylane is not topical, as it is injected subcutaneously)[3]
