Ritalin (methylphenidate) is a central nervous system stimulant used in the treatment of attention defecit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. In patients with ADHD, Ritalin is usually part of an overall plan that also consists of educational, social, and psychological treatment. Ritalin is currently manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.[1]

Side effects of Ritalin include anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, uncontrollable movements, loss of libido and menstrual pain. More serious side effects, such as paranoia and heartbeat irregularity, can also occur. In some cases, adverse reactions to Ritalin can be fatal. Ritalin can be habit forming, and has the potential for abuse.[2]

Common Ritalin Side Effects

The most common side effects of Ritalin include, but are not limited to:[2]

  • Nervousness
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Changes in blood pressure and pulse
  • Weight loss
  • Abdominal pain

More serious adverse reactions to Ritalin may occur in some patients, such as paranoia, mood swings, weakness in the limbs, hallucinations, speech problems, altered vision and exhaustion. Patients experiencing these should contact their doctor.[3]


Ritalin Allergic Reactions

Patients who are allergic to methylphenidate are advised not to consume Ritalin. There is also a possibility that patients will react to other ingredients. It is highly uncommon to experience severe allergic reactions; however, those who have hives, swelling in the face or throat, dizziness or difficulty breathing or swallowing may be in danger of anaphylaxis, and are advised to seek medical treatment.[3]

  • Ritalin may not recommended for patients with certain pre-existing medical conditions. These include hypertension, glaucoma, heart disease, irregular heart beat, anxiety or other mood disorders, Tourette's syndrome, seizures or overactive thyroid.[3]
  • Ritalin users are advised not to drive a motor vehicle or operate heavy machinery until they know how the drug affects them, as it may cause dulled alertness and/or blurred eyesight.[3]
  • Ritalin can cause dangerous heart and blood pressure conditions, sometimes resulting in death.[3]
  • Ritalin can be addictive. Therefore, it may not be right for those with histories of drug or alcohol abuse. In addition, patients are advised not to use more than the recommended dosage of Ritalin, and to consult a doctor before discontinuing the medication.[3]
