About Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is a palm tree, and extracts of it are used to make saw palmetto dietary supplements. This plant has been used to treat enlarged prostate conditions since the late 19th century. At one time, it was recognized as a drug in the United States. It remains prevalent in Europe, and is approved by German Commission E, an organization that assesses herbal remedies.[3]

There are differing opinions in the medical world when it comes to the effectiveness of saw palmetto. Some studies have shown this supplement to have no effect on enlarged prostates, while others suggest that it may in fact be an effective treatment option.[3] It appears that saw palmetto does not actually shrink the prostate, but it does cause the inner lining to shrink, thereby reducing pressure on urinary tracts.[1]
