Seroquel is a prescription medication and the brand name for quetiapine fumarate, an anti-psychotic drug that alters the functioning of certain chemicals in the brain. The medication is used to treat schizophrenia in adults and children over the age of 13 and bipolar disorder in adults and children over the age of 10. Seroquel is also approved to treat major depressive disorder when used in conjunction with various antidepressant medications.

Seroquel, which is manufactured by the pharmacuetical company AstraZeneca, is available in tablet form or extended release, and is taken one to three times daily by mouth.[1] The medication is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg, 300 mg, and 400 mg amounts.[2] Like many medications, Seroquel may cause side side effects. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, dry mouth, and drowsiness.[1] Severe side effects may include an increase in depression and the development of suicidal thoughts.[3]

Common Seroquel Side Effects

The most common side effects for adults differ from those for children. Adults are most likely to experience fatigue, lethargy, abdominal pain, sharp decrease in blood pressure when rising from a sitting or lying position, dry mouth, nausea, abnormal liver test results, increased weight, and constipation. Side effects with the highest incidences among children include throwing up, increased heart rate, tiredness, dizziness, increased desire for food, and weight gain.[3]

Other side effects may be more serious in nature, and include passing out, altered vision, involuntary body movements or seizures, and erection that is painful and last for several hours, strange bruising, rash, high temperature, flu-like symptoms, changes in heartbeat, blistering, or breathing problems.[1]

Seroquel Allergic Reactions

There is a low risk of severe allergic reaction among those who take Seroquel. It is possible to be allergic to the main ingredient, quetiapine, or to any of the other ingredients included in the medicine. The ingredients in Seroquel will differ from those in Seroquel XR. A pharmacist can provide a complete list of ingredients to check for possible allergens.[4]

Seroquel Precautions and Warnings

  • Seroquel may interfere with certain medicines, vitamins, or other supplements. These include sleeping pills, antidepressants, antifungals, blood pressure medications, and anti-anxiety drugs, among others. Specific medications include Diflucan, Nizoral, Depakote, and Norvir.[4]
  • Patients who take other antidepressants for additional psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder, may experience an increase in thoughts of suicide or suicidal behavior.[2]
  • Some patients who use Seroquel may develop high blood sugar or diabetes. Signs include extreme thirst and an increase in hunger. If left unchecked, diabetes may become fatal.[3]
  • Patients with cataracts may experience lens changes during the course of their Seroquel treatment.[2]
  • Children and adolescents may experience an increase in blood pressure.[2]
  • Seroquel may cause patients to become dizzy or pass out when standing up too rapidly after laying down.
  • Seroquel affects the body's ability to cool itself down, making users more prone to overheating. Staying hydrated throughout the day may help decrease this risk.[1]
  • Some patients may experience weight gain while taking Seroquel.[2]
