Simponi Patient Assistance Programs

Simponi (golimumab) is a self-administered, injectable medication that is used monthly to reduce pain and swelling caused by rheumatoid arthritis, active psoriatic arthritis, and active ankylosing spondylitis. Symptoms may be eased with just one shot; however, Simponi weakens the immune system, leaving patients vulnerable to infections like tuberculosis or other bacterial, viral or fungal diseases. More serious Simponi side effects can also occur.[1]

Janssen Biotech, Inc., the manufacturer of Simponi, offers a patient assistance program that can help some patients to save money on their medication. Other assistance programs are offered by the Johnson & Johnson Patient Assistance Foundation, the HealthWell Foundation, and the Patient Access Network Foundation.[2]

Simponi Information

Simponi is a prescription medication that works by blocking a protein called tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), found in the body's immune system. Patients with certain autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, active psoriatic arthritis, and active ankylosing spondylitis, have an excess of TNF-alpha. This can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints.[4] Taken monthly by self-injection, Simponi reduces TNF-alpha, which helps to block these underlying symptoms and preserve joint function.

There are some rare but serious side effects associated with Simponi, such as increased risk of certain cancers like lymphoma, as well as increased risk of hepatitis B, nervous system issues and heart failure.[1]
