About Simvastatin
Simvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug that was originally sold under the brand name Zocor. It is now available in a generic form as well. It is generally prescribed for use as a supplement to lifestyle changes, such as healthy diet and exercise. Simvastatin can help reduce LDL and triglycerides in the bloodstream while increasing the count of HDL, which is considered to be "good" cholesterol.[4]
Simvastatin, like other statins, statins, works by blocking a particular enzyme that enables the body to produce its own cholesterol. In some cases, physicians will not prescribe statins until other lifestyle changes have been implemented, in order to see if high cholesterol may be treated without the use of drugs.[2] Patients taking simvastatin are advised not to consume over four cups of grapefruit juice daily.[1]
