Spiriva Side Effects

Spiriva is a brand name for tiotropium, a type of prescription respiratory medication classified as a bronchodilator. Bronchodilators help relax and open the bronchi or air passages to the lungs, making it easier for patients to breathe.[1] Tiotropium is prescribed to to prevent bronchospasms, the wheezing and shortness of breath that occurs in those with emphysema, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.[2] The drug is administered by placing a Spiriva capsule in the Spiriva HandiHaler and inhaling it.[1]
Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or enlarged obstructions in the bladder or prostate are adviseed not take Spiriva. Possible side effects of Spiriva may include dry mouth and constipation. More serious adverse reactions can also occur, like painful urination, blurred vision, nausea, stuffy nose, fast heart rate, and changes in vision or pain in the eye.[1]

Common Spiriva Side Effects
The most common side effect of Spiriva is dryness in the mouth.[1] Other common adverse reactions are nausea, runny nose, blurred vision, dry mouth, white patches in mouth or throat, nosebleed, vomiting and constipation.[2]
Serious side effects of Spiriva include tongue swelling or redness; urinating less than usual or not at all; chest pain; sore throat; eye pain; red eyes; signs if the flu, such as fever and chills; increased heart rate; seeing "halos" around lights, or seeing strange colors; and painful urination. Patients with any of these symptoms are directed to seek medical help.[2]
Spiriva Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions to Spivira include rash; swelling of lips, face, tongue or throat; and itching. The active ingredient in Spiriva, tiotropium, may cause allergies. The inactive ingredients, such as lactose monohydrate, may also cause allergic reactions in certain individuals. Those with a history of ipratropium (Atrovent) allergies are also likely to be allergic to Spiriva. Although allergies are rare, in some cases they can be dangerous or even fatal without treatment.[3]
Spiriva Precautions and Warnings
- The FDA rates Spiriva as a pregnancy category C drug. It is not known whether the drug affects unborn children, as there has not been adequate research. Patients are advised not to use Spiriva while pregnant unless absolutely necessary to avoid complications.[3]
- Spivira is only used to prevent bronchospasms, and will not help relieve a bronchospasm that is already occurring. It is not a rescue medication.[1]
- Spiriva can cause interactions with drugs such as amiodarone (Cordarone), atropine (Atropen, Sal-Tropine, Ocu-Tropine), dofetilide (Tikosyn), thioridazine (Mellaril), antihistamines, eye drops, and medications for irritable bowel disease, motion sickness, Parkinson's disease, ulcers and urinary problems.[2]
- Spiriva may not be safe for patients who have ever had glaucoma, kidney disease, prostate disease, irregular heartbeat or urinary issues.[2]
