Statin Coupons

Jump to: navigation, search

Statins are prescribed to help lower cholesterol and prevent heart attack and stroke. Types of statins include atorvastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, lovastatin and simvastatin.[1]

There are several brand-name statins, and also some generic versions. Generics typically cost less, and are equally effective. A physician can determine whether or not statins may be beneficial for individual patients, and recommend specific brands and point the way to any coupons. Statins can be expensive, but coupons can help consumers obtain them at reduced prices, or even for free in some instances. Patients in need may also be able to get free statins from patient assistance programs.

About Statins

Statins are taken to lower LDL, or "bad cholesterol," levels. They do so by blocking a substance in the body that is used to produce cholesterol. Further, they can help reduce cholesterol buildup in the arteries by causing the body to reabsorb it. There are several brand-name versions of statins on the market, such as Lipitor and Crestor, and generic versions of Zocor and Prevachol (called simvastatin and pravastatin, respectively) are available as well.[1]

Even when statins are prescribed to help lower cholesterol, lifestyle changes are generally recommended as well. These include eating foods low in cholesterol and saturated fat, engaging in an exercise routine, and quitting smoking.[1]
