Symbicort Background

Symbicort® is prescribed to patients to prevent inflammation of the airways to the lungs, a primary symptom of severe asthma and COPD. Symbicort® is an aerosol inhalant containing two drugs that, when combined, help reduce swelling in the airway and relax muscles so patients can breathe easier.[1]

By preventing inflammation, Symbicort® helps to alleviate asthma attacks triggered by pollen, smoke, and dust.[5] These triggers can cause wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Symbicort® is not intended to be used as a remedy for sudden asthma attacks; rather it is intended to prevent attacks from occurring.[5]

How to Get Symbicort Samples

Patients who want to try Symbicort® can register at the official website to get a printable coupon good for a free month's supply.[6] To register, patients must fill out a simple form with their name, age, and e-mail address. Patients will also be asked if they are enrolled in a government, state, or federally-funded insurance program, as public insurance recipients are not eligible. In addition, this offer is not valid in Massachusetts and other states where prohibited by law. The coupon is not for mail order purchases. A doctor's prescription is required to use the coupon, which may only be redeemed once.[6]

AstraZenica offers continued savings for eligible patients through their patient assistance programs:

  • AZ&Me Prescription Savings program for people without insurance provides help with Symbicort® costs for patients who have no prescription coverage and earn $2,500 a month or less for singles, and up to $5,833 monthly for families of five (with a sliding scale for different household sizes).
  • AZ&Me Prescription Savings Program for people with Medicare Part D offers benefits for those who meet the same income guidelines as above and also have coverage from Medicare Part D. To qualify for aid, applicants must have already spent 3% of their yearly household earnings on prescriptions.

AtraZenica will also help those who do not meet the above criteria if they can establish financial hardship in the past year. Reasons for financial hardship can include divorce, income reduction, and change in the number of household members. All patients must have a social security number, work visa or green card to get assistance.[7]
