From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Synthroid (levothyroxine sodium) is a prescription drug manufactured by Abbott Laboratories. The medication treats hypothyroidism, a condition in which the body does not produce enough of the hormone thyroxine. The condition is also called underactive thyroid. Hypothyroidism is the opposite of hyperthyroidism, which is overactive thyroid. Synthoid helps hypothyroidism by replacing thyroxine that the body is lacking. The drug comes in 12 strengths for varying levels of thyroid activity. Once the need for Synthroid is established, it is generally taken for life.[1]
Synthroid drug coupons and other savings are available from the manufacturer through the True Balance program. Savings opportunities also come from patient assistance programs and drug discount cards.

About Synthroid
Synthroid had been on the market for 46 years when it was finally approved by the FDA until the early 2000s. It was the most commonly-used thyroid drug even before approval.[3] The drug is taken in carefully controlled doses, and is provided in strengths ranging from .025 mg to .1 mg.[4]
Most side effects of Synthroid are due to overdose. Taking too much of the drug can cause tiredness, hunger, weight loss, sweating, headache, nausea, anxiety, hair loss, high blood pressure and more.[4]
Synthroid Patient Assistance Programs and Coupons
- Abbott Laboratories has the True Balance Program that provides coupons for discounted refills as well as other tools to help patients understand and treat their hypothyroidism. Patients can register on the Synthroid website and will need to provide basic personal information as well as a valid e-mail address.[5] This program serves patients with or without medical insurance with drug coverage, and saves patients $3 on each 30-pill prescription or $10 on each 90 or 100-pill prescription.[6]
- Abbott Patient Assistance Foundation offers free or discounted Synthroid to low-income patients. Those with insurance are generally not accepted, but some Medicare Part D patients may be eligible.[7]
- Rx Outreach Medications sells Synthroid for less to patients who fall below a certain income, despite their insurance status. The organization ships the drug directly to the patients' homes.[7]
