Tamiflu and Pregnancy
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
While there are no controlled studies of Tamiflu on pregnant women, in some cases, the risks involved with being sick with the flu can overshadow the potential risks of the drug. However, the manufacturer only recommends Tamilflu during pregnancy when the medicine is clearly needed.[1]
Tamiflu is the brand name for the prescription anti-viral drug oseltamivir. Tamiflu treats influenza (flu) by slowing the spread of the influenza virus in the body. The FDA approved Tamiflu in 1999. It is manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals. Tamiflu is not a substitute for an annual flu vaccination. .[1]
Tamiflu is only effective if used within two days off flu onset. It can reduce the length of time that patients experience stuffy nose, coughing, aching, fever and chills. The drug is approved for adults and children over a year old. The most common side effects are mild to moderate nausea and vomiting.[2]

Tamiflu Pregnancy Category
There is not yet sufficient information to confirm the effects of Tamiflu on pregnant women. Because there is the possibility of risk to the fetus, however, the manufacturer recommends that Tamiflu should be used during pregnancy only when the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risk to the fetus.[1]
Tamiflu has been studied in rats and in rabbits. In these studies, pregnant animals were given between four and 50 times the maximum dosage for humans. Among rats, adverse events of the fetus were minimal. The rabbits demonstrated slightly higher toxicity, and their babies had small skeletal abnormalities. However, there is no way to accurately predict how a drug will behave in human beings through animal testing, and other possible negative effects could occur in human fetuses.[1]
Tamiflu and Breastfeeding
The information for lactating mothers who take Tamiflu is also inconclusive. No definitive studies have been conducted to determine whether or not Tamiflu is safe for women who are breastfeeding. Mother rats who were given Tamiflu were found to have it in their breast milk, and it is possible that the same happens in humans. In some cases, flu symptoms may justify Tamiflu use for nursing mothers.[1]
