Topamax® is an anticonvulsant prescription medication used to prevent seizures and migraine headaches.[1]

Patients who are looking to save money on Topamax® can consult with their doctors about obtaining free Topamax® samples. Pharmaceutical companies like Ortho-McNeil-Janssen often provide doctors with free samples of their new and existing medications. If no samples are available, there may be other savings opportunities in the form of coupons or patient assistance programs. While coupons are valid for most patients with prescriptions, patient assistance programs have application processes and often only help those with no insurance and/or low incomes. Drug savings cards are another potential option.

Topamax Background

Topamax® is the brand name for the drug topiramate, used to prevent migraines as well as seizures. Topamax® is manufactured by Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and was approved by the FDA in 1996.[3]

Although Topamax® may be used to help curb seizures caused by the disease epilepsy, Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. notes that there is no cure for epilepsy even though it can be controlled to some degree. However, seizures may stop over time, and this is more likely to happen when medical treatments such as Topomax are used.[5]

Common side effects of Topamax® include nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, tingling in the arms and legs, taste change and weight loss.[1] On March 4, 2011, the FDA issued a warning about Topomax and pregnancy. The administration warned that expectant mothers who take Topomax may be putting the unborn baby at risk for harm, causing such complications as cleft palate or cleft lip.[5]

In rare cases, Topamax® can cause vision loss that may be accompanied by eye pain or redness. If left untreated, the damage may be permanent. The manufacturer also warns that some patients have reported pharmacists confusing the drug Toprol XL® for Topamax®, and advises consumers to check their pills to ensure they are taking the right medicine.

How to Get Topamax Samples

Patients interested in trying out Topamax® to determine whether or not the medication works for them may be able to obtain free samples directly from their doctors. Pharmaceuticals companies often provide doctors with free samples of certain medications. Typically, only physicians and medical offices are able to provide patients with free samples of prescriptions like Topamax®.[1]

Additional savings may be available through Topamax® coupons and patient assistance programs. Patient assistance programs for Topamax® are available through the Johnson & Johnson Patient Assistance Foundation. Eligible patients can receive free medication for up to a year. In order to qualify, patients must be treated by a licensed U.S. healthcare provider, reside in the United States, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands, must not have prescription drug coverage, and must meet certain income requirements.[6]

The Together Rx Access card also provides discounts on Topamax® to qualified patients. The program is open to patients with no drug insurance, no Medicare and incomes below $45,000 a year for singles or $90,000 a year for households of four. Patients may receive and use the card at no charge.[7]
