About Tylenol
Acetaminophen was discovered during the 19th century, and approved by the FDA as a pain reliever in 1951.[5] [6] Johnson & Johnson began marketing Tylenol in 1955, and received FDA approval to sell it over the counter in 1960.[5] Tylenol is manufactured through Johnson & Johnson's McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division. Tylenol products can be purchased through most pharmacies, grocery stores, and retail stores that sell over-the-counter medications.
The active ingredient in original Tylenol, acetaminophen, has few side effects. However, there is a risk of severe liver damage. This is more likely to happen when patients inadvertently use more than one product with this ingredient, or exceed recommended dosages of Tylenol or other acetaminophen sources. The liver damage can be permanent, and in severe cases it is necessary to get an organ transplant.
Some Tylenol products also have other active ingredients that can cause side effects. For example, Tylenol PM contains diphenhydramine, the same active ingredient in Benadryl. This can cause upset stomach, dizziness, congestion in the chest, and nervousness.
