About Uloric
Uloric is prescribed to adults with a known history of gout. It is taken as tablets by mouth once daily, and is available in 40 mg and 80 mg strengths.
Uloric is used to prevent gout attacks, but not to treat them once they occur. An occasional gout flare-up may happen when starting treatment with Uloric, but this may subside over time. Patients are instructed to continue using Uloric throughout the flare-up.[2]
Uloric side effects include upset stomach or pain in the joints. Signs of a serious adverse reaction to Uloric include trouble speaking, skin rash, inability to take deep breaths, faintness, and numb or weak limbs.[2]
Uloric Patient Assistance Programs and Coupons
- Tadeka offers the Uloric Savings Card, which can drop the monthly price of Uloric to $35. The maximum benefit from the program is $160 for each prescription, so if more than $35 is left of the co-pay or out-of-pocket cost, patients will need to cover the difference. The discount card is not available for those who have publicly-funded insurance policies that cover any portion of the medication.[3]
- Patients can also take advantage of Takeda Pharmaceuticals' patient assistance program for Uloric. Qualified patients can receive free medication for up to a year. In order to be eligible, a patient's annual income can not be more than 300% of the national poverty level, and they must not have prescription drug coverage from an insurance plan. Medicare Part D patients may be eligible.[5]
- Together Rx Access also has a discount drug card program that covers Uloric. The card is only given to patients who do not have any prescription drug insurance. This includes Medicare Part D, and those eligible for the public program may not get the card. In addition, patients must earn no more $45,000 if single or $90,000 for a family of four.[6]
About Gout
Gout is caused by a condition called hyperuricemia, which means that there is an excess of uric acid in the blood. When this happens, the body can form crystals that accumulate in the joints and cause painful gout symptoms such as burning pain, swelling and redness of the joint. If left untreated, gout can happen repeatedly and cause damage in the joints and tendons.
Gout can occur in the foot, ankle, or knee, but most often affects the big toe. Gout can happen in both men and women, but most often occurs in older men. These attacks can happen over and over unless gout is treated. Over time, they can harm joints, tendons, and other tissues. Patients have a higher chance of developing gout if they are overweight, drink a lot of alcohol, or eat an abundance of meat or fish that are high in chemicals called purines. Foods high in purine include beef, pork, lamb, bacon, seafood and foods with a significant amount of yeast such as bread, beer and liquor. Uloric works by decreasing the amount of uric acid that is made in the body. Uloric is used to prevent gout attacks, but not to treat them once they occur.[7]
