Valtrex Side Effects
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Valtrex is the brand name for valacyclovir hydrochloride, an anti-viral prescription medication that helps reduce the risk of spreading genital herpes, eases cold sore symptoms and aids in the reduction of herpes outbreaks. There is no cure for genital herpes. Even with Valtrex it is still possible to spread the herpes virus, and the drug may not prevent all recurrences. The makers of Valtrex do not yet know if it reduces the risk of herpes transmission among same-sex couples. Valtrex can also treat chicken pox and cold sores around the mouth, as well as herpes zoster (shingles). Valtrex is indicated for use among children for chickenpox and cold sores. All other uses are only approved for adults.[1]
Some of the more common Valtrex side effects include dizziness, headache, pain in the stomach, throwing up, and throat irritation. Other, more serious Valtrex side effects exist as well.[1]

Valtrex Precautions and Warnings
- The manufacturer of Valtrex warns that patients should not exceed more than 2 doses in a 12-hour period, which is consideres a day's worth of treatment.[1]
- Those who have HIV/AIDS, kidney disease, liver problems or compromised immune systems are advised to speak with their doctors about these conditions before beginning a Valtrex treatment program.[2]
- Valtrex may cause interactions with medications that can cause kidney problems, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like naproxen (found in brand-name Aleve) and ibuprofen (found in Advil).[3]
- The manufacturer of Valtrex recommends that genital herpes patients use safer-sex practices every time they have sex. Although Valtrex can reduce the likelihood of transmission, it is still possible to spread the herpes virus to others while using it. Using a latex condom and abstaining from sexual activity during outbreaks can help stop herpes from spreading.[1]
- Patients taking Valtrex are advised not simultaneously take acyclovir, which is very similar in make-up.[3]
- In rare cases, Valtrex can cause dizziness. Doctors recommend that Valtrex users abstain from operating a motor vehicle or performing other potentially-hazardous tasks until they understand the effects that Valtrex has on them and their abilities.[3]
- Doctors advise against consuming large amounts of alcohol while taking Valtrex.[3]
- Senior citizens are more likely to experience Valtrex side effects such as confusion or changes in state of mind (like irritability), as well as kidney issues that may affect urination.[3]
- Pregnant women are typically advised not to take Valtrex unless the benefit clearly outweighs any risk. Valtrex may be transmitted through breast milk, but evidence suggests that it does not usually cause any harm to the baby.[3]
