Warfarin is an anticoagulant drug that prevents the formation of blood clots and stops pre-existing blood clots from growing larger. Warfarin is prescribed to treat patients who have had heart attacks, those with irregular heartbeats, and those who have prosthetic heart valves. Side effects of warfarin include gas, palid skin tone, upset stomach, chills, sleepiness, bloating and hair loss. Warfarin may cause excessive bleeding, which can be dangerous, particularly among those with an aneurysm, blood in their urine or stools, bacterial endocarditis, those about to go into surgery or those have recently had surgery, stomach bleeding, an ulcer, a bleeding disorder and a blood cell disorder like anemia.[1]

Common Warfarin Side Effects
Common side effects of Warfarin include nausea, vomiting, bloating, gas, pale skin, hair loss, chills, general coldness, drowsiness and taste changes.[2]
Serious side effects of Warfarin include feeling flu-ish, jaundice, pressure or pain in the chest, swelling of the limbs or the appendages, reduced desire for food, unusual feelings on the skin like tingling, numbness or burning, problems with mobility that can occur anywhere in the body, and an erection that hurts and does not go away for hours.[1]

Warfarin Allergic Reactions
It is very rarely that patients experiences serious allergic reactions from warfarin. However, allergies are possible and in some cases they can end up fatal if not properly treated. Signs that a patient is having a severe allergic to warfarin include dizziness, swelling up of the throat or other areas on or near the face, itchy skin, rash, and breathing problems.[3]
Inactive ingredients in drugs that use warfarin, like Coumadin, and Jantoven, may also cause allergic reactions in those with corresponding allergies.[2]
Warfarin Precautions and Warnings
- Warfarin can cause severe bleeding, particularly in those with blood disorders, bleeding problems, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, anemia, cancer, chronic diarrhea and liver or kidney disease.[2]
- Alcohol can increase the anti-coagulant effects of warfarin, increasing bleeding risks.[4]
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) and (Advil, Motrin), and medicines for gout, heart disease, cancer, cholesterol, colds, allergies, depression, diabetes, digestive issues, seizures, thyroid problems, mental illness, pain, tuberculosis and oral contraceptives may interact with warfarin.[2]
- Warfarin can cause harm to, and possibly kill, fetuses. Therefore, the drug is not recommended for pregnant women or those who are planning to conceive. Warfarin can also be transmitted via breast milk, though there is only a low risk of harm to nursing infants. Breastfeeding women are advised to confer with a medical expert before taking warfarin.[3]
