About Wellbutrin XL®

Wellbutrin XL® is the trade name for the generic drug bupropion and is in the class of antidepressant drugs called norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs). Wellbutrin XL® (bupropion) antidepressant medication is available by prescription only. Bupropion may be prescribed to treat depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder.[2] This NDRI antidepressant works by affecting the activity levels of certain chemicals in the brain such as norepinephrine or dopamine.[1]

Wellbutrin XL® is available in various formulations such as tablets, sustained-release or extended release (long-acting) tablets in 150 mg and 300 mg strengths. Common drug side effects include dry mouth, sleeping problems, appetite changes, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea, increased sweating, headache, taste changes, restlessness, nervousness, vomiting, and weight changes.[3] [4]

In 2012, Wellbutrin XL® was used in a clinical trial to determine if the medication would be useful for treating depression in women who were being treated for breast cancer. Wellbutrin XL® was selected for the trial because research showed that it had a lower incidence of side effects such as sexual dysfunction, weight gain, and exhaustion than some other antidepressants.[5]
