Xenical is a prescription det pill containing orlistat, which is also the active ingredient in over-the-counter Alli. Both Alli and Xenical work along with a reduced-fat-and-calorie diet and exercise regimen to assist people in weight loss. Xenical also treats overweight diabetics, as well as those with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease.[1]
Xenical is a lipase inhibitor, a drug that reduces the absorption of dietary fats from ingested foods in the intestine. Orlistat may be used after weight loss as an aid in preventing people from gaining it back.[2] Since the unabsorbed fat is removed from the body in the stool, orlistat can cause several unpleasant drug side effects including include abdominal pain, gas, oily spotting on underwear or clothes, diarrhea, and reduced ability to control bowel movements.[1]

Common Xenical Side Effects
The most common Xenical side effects include gastrointestinal problems such as stomach or abdominal pain, loose stools, diarrhea, oily leakage from the rectum, increased number of bowel movements, oily or fatty stools, bowel movement urges, and trouble controlling bowel movements. Xenical has also been reported to cause irregular menstrual periods, rectal pain, headaches, and anxiety.
More serious side effects include pains in the upper right part of the stomach, rashes, hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, excessive tiredness or weakness, vomiting, itching, dark-colored urine, severe or continuous stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, light-colored stools, loss of appetite.[1]

Xenical Allergic Reactions
In rare but serious cases, Xenical can cause allergy symptoms like dizziness, trouble breathing. rashes or hives, and a swelling of the lips, face, throat or tongue.[5] Allergic reactions to Xenical can be caused by an allergy to orlistat or one of the inactive ingredients. These inactive ingredients include cellulose, microcrystalline, sodium starch glycolate type a potato, sodium lauryl sulfate, povidone, talc, gelatin, titanium dioxide, fd&c blue no. 1, shellac, and aluminum oxide.[6]
Xenical Precautions and Warnings
- Xenical is not safe for patients with gall bladder cholestasis or the digestive issue chronic malabsorption syndrome.[5]
- Diabetics may need to alter their insulin dosages or food choices as their condition improves with weight loss.[5]
- Xenical is not for pregnant or nursing women.[5]
- Xenical may interact with blood thinners such as Warfarin, or diabetes medicines like metformin.[5]
