Yaz is a prescription birth control medication manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals.[1] First approved by the FDA in 2001, Yaz is a brand of combination drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. It works by preventing ovulation and changing a woman's cervical and uterine lining, thereby making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for fertilized eggs to attach to the uterus.[2]

Common side effects include headache, nausea, changes in menstrual periods, altered moods and soreness in the breasts. Yaz has also been linked to serious side effects like increased risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attacks. Those taking Yaz are advised not to smoke, as smoking can increase these risks, especially in patients over the age of 35.[1]

Common Yaz Side Effects

In clinical trials, the most frequent side effects experienced with Yaz included:[1]

  • Changes in menstrual cycle
  • Headaches, including migraine headaches
  • Nausea, which may be accompanied by vomiting
  • Breast tenderness, swelling, or pain
  • Variations in normal mood

Some serious adverse reactions attributed to the use of Yaz include increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and blood clots.[1] Other serious side effects reported have been changes in vision, major abdominal pain, exhaustion, weakness or numbness in the lims, severe chest pain, and depression.[2]

Multiple Yaz lawsuits have been filed alleging that Bayer failed to warn patients and doctors of the dangers associated with Yaz and Yasmin birth control, despite the company's knowledge of the risks.

Yaz Allergic Reactions

Women who have previously shown allergic reactions to estrogens or progestins, including ethinyl estradiol or drospirenone, are likely to be allergic to Yaz. Very few people will experience severe allergies to Yaz. However, those who show symptoms like itching and swelling of the throat or facial areas, dizziness or problems breathing or swallowing are advised to seek prompt medical attention. Severe allergies may be fatal.[3]

Yaz Precautions and Warnings

  • Yaz should not be taken by women who suspect they may be pregnant, and women should wait about a month after delivery before taking Yaz.[2]
  • Women taking Yaz should not smoke, as it increases the risks of serious side effects, including blood clots, heart attack and stroke. This is especially true in women over the age of 35.[1]
  • Because Yaz has been shown to increase potassium levels in certain patients, those women that have liver, kidney or adrenal disease should not take the drug, as it may result in serious health problems, including heart conditions.[1]
  • Women who are taking certain other drugs may need to have their potassium levels checked each month while they are taking Yaz. These drugs include, but are not limited to:[1]
  • NSAIDs-ibuprofen (found in Advil and other brand names)
  • Naproxen (in Aleve
  • Potassium supplementation
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Angiotensin-II receptor antagonists
  • Aldosterone antagonists

About Yaz

Although primarily used for birth control, Yaz may also be prescribed to patients suffering from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), helping to treat the symptoms associated with the disorder. This includes such symptoms as anxiety, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, depression, joint pain, muscle pain, headache, and weight gain. Yaz is the only birth control pill that has been proven to help aid in PMDD treatment.[1]
