Zemplar (paricalcitol) coupons can help patients pay for this medication, which treats complications of late-stage chronic kidney disease, or CKD. Patients can save with the The Zemplar Z5 Plus Program or other patient assistance programs from manufacturer Abbott and other organizations.[1]

Zemplar is a prescription drug taken by patients with chronic kidney disease in its later stages. Specifically, Zemplar treats secondary hyperparathyroidism, a silent, or non-symptomatic, side effect of chronic kidney disease, or CKD. In patients who have CKD, the kidneys no longer turn dietary Vitamin D into a form useful to the body for strengthening bones. As a result, the parathyroid gland becomes overactive and produces too much hormone. Calcium and phosphorous levels are out of balance, resulting in weak and brittle bones as well as damage to the parathyroid that could require surgery.[1]

About Zemplar

Zemplar, manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, is a prescription drug, an activated form of Vitamin D. Patients taking Zemplar have chronic kidney disease, or CKD, in stages 3 to 5[1] In CKD patients the parathyroid gland reacts to the weaker kidney function by trying to make too much hormone, causing an imbalance in calcium and phosphorous. This condition appears in about a third of Stage 3 CKD, in 75% of patients with Stage 4 CKD, and in virtually all dialysis patients in Stage 5 CKD. Doctors monitor CKD patients carefully to determine levels of calcium and Vitamin D to avoid serious side effects of excessive amounts in the body.[1]

Zemplar is supplied in three strengths: 1 mcg, 2 mcg and 4 mcg per capsule.[3]

Zemplar Patient Assistance Programs and Coupons

There are several opportunities to save on Zemplar prescriptions:

  • The Z5 Plus Program from Abbott provides Zemplar to eligible patients for a copay as low as $5 per month for a year with a drug savings card. The savings from this discount are substantial, potentially mounting to over $3000, depending on dosage and schedule. Because of state law, residents of Massachusetts are not eligible for the drug coupon, nor are any patients with publicly-financed insurance coverage. Patients ineligible for savings may still enroll in the program to receive free information and refill reminders from Zemplar.[2]
  • Manufacturer Abbott Laboratories has a patient assistance program to help uninsured and underinsured patients afford their prescription medications. Patients can call 800-222-6885 for an application or apply on the program website.[4]
    • Abbott co-sponsors the Partnership for Prescription Assistance. Patients can apply online to find available Zemplar assistance from the 475 participating programs.[5]
    • With others in the health care field, Abbott takes part in the Together RX Access Card program. Eligible patients--the uninsured and those not covered by Medicare--can apply online. There are also income caps in place.[6]
  • HealthWell Foundation Copay Program helps insured and uninsured patients who meet income guidelines get discounted Zemplar.[7]
  • Retail pharmacy chains savings programs such as theCVS ExtraCare Program, the Rite Aid Wellness+ Program and the Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan provide other opportunities to save on prescription drugs.[8]
