Zicam is an over-the-counter medication that the manufacturer claims reduces the severity and duration of symptoms associated with the common cold. There are many different administration options for Zicam, including but not limited to:^[4]

• Rapid Melts (original formula, Vitamin C, and Vitamin C & Echinacea) and Cough Melts - these are administered by allowing the tablet to dissolve in the consumer's mouth
• Chewables and ChewCaps - both of these require the consumer to chew the tablet or capsule thoroughly
• Oral Mist - administered by spraying into throat
• Cough Spray - administered similar to the oral mist, but sprayed close to the consumer's mouth
• Multi-Symptom Cold & Flu To Go Nighttime and Daytime - mix in hot or cold liquid
• Liqui-Loz - taken as a lozenge by mouth
• Allergy Relief Nasal Gel and Sinus Relief Nasal Gel - these gels are applied directly from the package to the nostrils
• Allergy Relief Gel Swabs - single-use swabs applied to the nostrils

Zicam Warnings

In 2009, the FDA reported that some versions of Zicam - gels and swabs - can cause patients to lose their sense of smell, a condition called anosmia. This has occurred with only one use, and consumers were instructed to stop using these products and throw them away. Anosmia is a disabling condition that can lead to permanent loss of the ability to smell. The warning does not apply to products consumed orally, only those directly applied to the nose. Affected products are:
