Zyrtec is an over-the-counter or (OTC) antihistamine medication used to treat allergy symptoms including sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat and watery eyes. Zyrtec is designed to treat seasonal or outdoor allergies - such as pollen allergies, as well as perennial or year -round allergies such as those to pet dander, dust and mold. Zyrtec was also designed and marketed as a non-drowsy antihistamine like Claritin and Allegra. Earlier antihistamines such as Benadryl have a serious side effect of drowsiness, so much so that Benadryl is frequently used to treat insomnia today.[1]
