Zyrtec Side Effects
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Zyrtec is an over-the-counter or (OTC) antihistamine medication used to treat allergy symptoms including sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat and watery eyes. The active ingredient in Zyrtec is ceterizine. Zyrtec-D also contains pseudoephedrine. Zyrtec is available in adult and children's formulas, and comes in the form of liquid gel capsules, tablets, chewable tablets and syrup. Zyrtec works by hindering the effects of chemicals in the body called histamines. Histamines are responsible for allergic reactions to otherwise harmless substances.[1]
The most common side effects of Zyrtec include diarrhea, upset stomach, dryness of the mouth, pain in the stomach and drowsiness.[1]

Common Zyrtec Side Effects
There are a range of common side effects associated with Zyrtec administration. These symptoms include, but are not limited to:[3]
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
- Tired feeling
- Nausea
- Constipation
Although not as common, some serious side effects may also occur when using Zyrtec. Patients who experience difficulty breathing after taking Zyrtec are advised to seek prompt medical assistance.
Zyrtec Allergic Reactions
Patients who are allergic to hydroxyzine will likely not be good candidates for Zyrtec. Other, inactive ingredients in Zyrtec may cause allergic responses as well. A pharmacist or physician can help to determine whether or not a patient's allergies pose too much of a risk to take this drug. Signs of severe allergic reaction include rash, itching or swollen face and throat. Serious allergies can be dangerous if left untreated.[2]

Zyrtec Precautions and Warnings
- The manufacturers recommend that patients tell their pharmacist or doctor if they are taking any other medications, as this may help prevent an allergic reaction from occurring. Patients using topical antihistamines should not use Zyrtec, due to the risk of intensified side effects. This includes those using diphenhydramine cream, ointment or spray.[4]
- Because Zyrtec may affect pregnancy and can also be passed on to a baby through breast milk, pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to consult their doctors to find out if Zyrtec is the right course of treatment.[2]
- It is possible to overdose on Zyrtec. Symptoms of overdose include irritability, restlessness or excessive tiredness.[1]
